Yesterday I created my first holiday arrangement for the season. How do I know? The red and white colors are the key. Red denotes the “happy” in the wish for happy holidays. Red is a good omen and a propitious sign. White signifies the color of the season.
Nearly all my time during class was devoted to preparation of the materials. Thorns were located at 2-inch intervals along the entire length of the vine-like stems. These had to be removed.
This completed, I wrapped the vines around the vase and then asked: What should come next? What would provide contrast and a succinct holiday message?
These two anemones, one red and one white, filled the bill. These fresh and vulnerable flowers provide lovely contrast with the dry, wild and prickly vines. The message in red and white: Happy Holidays!
Simplified expression is one of the basic principles of Ikebana. I intend to use the simplicity of this arrangement as a touchstone for the holiday time ahead.
