When I made my first trip to the High Line, I noticed the hot pink, coral and white flowers erupting from atop the awning over an old meat-packing house on a still-seedy stretch of Washington Street at
13th Street. Friday's New York Times carried an article about the flowers. It was from the City Room Blogging site. I read it with interest.
I wondered, who was responsible for this surprising and ever-so-delightful display? I've wondered also about the reforming power of flowers. From time to time through the years, I've asked myself: What would happen in a community in which every window had a window box filled with flowers?
The mystery gardener on Washington Street was Robert Isabell. Someone who knew him said that he had been "very excited about the park with its lush landscaping" and this was his response. It is magical!
What more will be happening in this part of the city blessed with this wonderful green space? I look forward to more surprises as the artist within is evoked in more and more people.
